In Liz’s Words

"For close to five decades I have travelled across five continents and both hemispheres collecting stories, developing storytelling programmes, writing, teaching, telling stories, and, most importantly, bringing people together from all backgrounds and walks of life."

Liz Weir is one of Ireland’s most respected storytellers, known internationally for her commitment to storytelling as an art that belongs everywhere — not just on stages, but wherever people meet.

She has told stories to audiences of all ages on five continents, performing in settings as varied as pubs, prisons, hospital rooms, and some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Vanderbilt Hall in New York’s Grand Central Station and the Royal Albert Hall.

Liz was the first recipient of the International Story Bridge Award from the National Storytelling Network in the USA, which recognised her exemplary work in promoting the art of storytelling across cultures. In 2019, she was awarded an MBE for her services to the arts and to education.

Her written work includes two collections of stories for children — Boom Chicka Boom and Here, There and Everywhere(O’Brien Press) — as well as When Dad Was Away (Frances Lincoln Books), a picture book based on her storytelling work in prisons.

Beyond performance and writing, Liz is deeply rooted in cultural and community life in Ireland. She owns and runs Ballyeamon Barn, a tourist hostel and cultural centre in the Glens of Antrim, and serves as Director of the Glens Storytelling Festival, as well as a committee member of the Cape Clear International Storytelling Festival.

At the heart of Liz Weir’s work is a belief that stories connect people — across borders, generations, and circumstances — and that telling them well is both an art and an act of generosity.
